My name is Alejandra Remijio and I live and create in the artist community of Clinton Hill, one of the many neighborhoods in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Like most of us who sew I was influenced by my grandmother. She was a convent educated seamstress who did bead and appliqué work on wedding dresses for extra income. My mother would tell me stories of how my grandmother would make clothes for her from just a verbal description and a few yards of fabric.
I recall my grandmother coming to visit one summer and we worked together making clothes for my upcoming school year. It was so fun to wear my outfits knowing that I had created them. They were one of a kind.
My mother‘s style and beauty were a big influenced on me as well. Her tastes were shaped by the fashions of Mexico’s retail store windows during the 1950’s. Seeing my mother dressed up was such an event. She had an eye for exceptional quality and such elegant taste.
As teenagers my older sister and I would tag along with my brother and his girlfriend to Melrose Ave in L.A. during the 1980’s. It was a sea of cool boutiques and vintage stores during that time. We would find the coolest clothes and accessories and practically wear them out. I was experimenting and developing my own sense of style.
To pay for my college expenses, I worked in luxury retail stores and was exposed to the top designers in men’s and women’s apparel. I was drawn to the colorful prints, luxurious fabrics and quality construction. I slowly started to collect fabric for no reason only because I was drawn to it. Little did I know it was the beginning of my journey.
In 1998 I moved to NYC and after several years in the fashion retail/wholesale business I was eager to create a product that I could make myself. I brushed up on my sewing skills and began to collect unique and beautiful fabric. I found it hard to find beautiful table linens that expressed my taste so I created Copper Colored Gal Designs and made them myself. I design one of a kind and limited edition table linens and accessories. I collect fabric and trim from my worldly travels. I love using rich and unique fabrics of cotton and silk. I enhance each piece with trim to give it a finished look. They are hand cut and machine sewn by me in my Brooklyn studio.
Copper Colored Gal tablecloths have found their way into Bermuda, Canada, Texas, Florida, Japan and NYC homes. CCG has also been featured online at New York Magazine and San Diego Home and Garden Lifestyles magazine.
